What to buy in Laos?
Laos is also famed for its outstanding hill tribe textiles, silks and other various handicrafts. When visit Laos, both night markets in Vientiane and especially in Luang Prabang that should not miss out. On the other sites, tourists can find and buy antiques, handicrafts, silks, arts or paintings at souvenir stores in the main tourist spots in the country. Commonly, there are still fake silvers, jewellery, stone gems and antiques. You should ask for an assistance from your local guide’s advice or let them highly recommend you a good place to buy those.
Laos is one of the best places in Southeast Asia, who grows coffee: Robusta and Arabica. Literally means “Paxong” in Lao, Lao people typically drink Robusta coffee which is sweetened with condense milk. You may want to try the authentic flavor of Robusta coffee and can be easily found at main streets not likely the ones at brand coffee lounge or shop.
Silks & Textiles
Artistically and intricately weaved silks & combined cottons can be purchased in small villages in the order to support the local communities, you get good deal and you have chances to observe the locals producing those lovely products. Alternatively, you can buy some at the morning market in Vientiane and at night market in Luang Prabang.
Hmong silver is highly recommended if you look for silver jewellery. It could be hard for you to find ethnic Hmong crafted silver items in Hmong village in the north. However, you can find plenty of Hmong silver jewellery at the morning market in Vientiane and some stalls at daily night market in Luang Prabang.
Officially, you are banned from leaving the country with taking real antiques including Buddha images, statues, artifacts etc. You can find a lot of homemade copies of artifacts and antiques selling in bigger stores, markets and shops in the country.
Carvings & Handicrafts
There are varieties of handicrafts/carved items displaying and selling in the main tourist regions in the country. Each tourist site you go, there are always a few small villages or communities established in the order to raise the profit for local families, affordable prices, reliable quality and your support is very appreciated. Your journey always ends with a worth buying carvings, handicrafts including stone sculptures, wood crafts, woven-baskets and so on.
